Our Pack

Hide-a-Paw is a family-owned and operated business that was created to care for our fur babies. Growing up in the mountains of Western North Carolina, love of the land and all its many creatures is embedded in our culture. We love and care for our animals like family and want them to have the best possible quality of life.  This is how Hide-a-Paw was born. 

Mom and Dad had a little toy poodle, Mattie, that slept in the bed each night. She was a snuggle muffin and wanted to be wherever they were, especially when it was bedtime. She was only 8lbs and couldn’t make it through the night without needing water or her pee pad so every night she’d wake up Dad to let her down to go potty or to access her food and water. Then, just as they were falling back asleep, she’d let out a yip to signal she was ready to get back on the bed! Night after night this process became a routine.  

Frustrated with sleepless nights, Dad decided to buy pet steps to aid his little baby dog in getting on and off the bed. The steps were bulky but did their job and let Mattie on and off the bed without waking up Mom or Dad. Unfortunately, A new problem was created. Dad couldn’t get around the steps in the morning without having to move them and Mom would trip over the steps when she needed to get up. The steps were constantly having to be renegotiated around the bed, confusing Mattie and creating new hazards for Mom and Dad each day. A few months and a few dozen pet steps later, Dad decided he’d had enough and would build something better!

Dad, an inventor, and builder by trade spent eight years perfecting the "disappearing" pet step design and solving the problem of the bulky, immovable steps. He spent years building models out of wood and metal, finally deciding hard plastic would be the most durable, stable design and capable of bearing the most weight. He worked on hinges and joints to ensure the steps collapsed and folded seamlessly. He played with width and rises to match the gait of many animals, not only Mattie. 

Each design had room for improvement…until now. Hide-a-Paw is the perfected design, the final creation. It is the result of a labor of love, ensuring the best possible care for our pets. We hope it offers the best possible quality of life for you and your fur baby too!
